Death Meditation: A Unique Day of the Dead Experience

  • Walnut Hill 4804 State Road 2509 Raleigh, NC, 27610 United States (map)

For those who participated in our chapter’s last death meditation, you already know what a profound, moving experience this is. For those who didn’t, you are about to find out.

The practice of meditating on death is as much about living as it is dying.

We meditate on our own death because although we know that dying is certain, and the time of our death is uncertain, we don't necessarily experience each day as though our bodies and minds are impermanent.  We often unconsciously assume that we have "more time".  When we meditate on death, we have a deep understanding of what is left to be tended.  We are able to move through latent fears and experience freedom on the other side.  Many hospice nurses have shared that those who pass on with the most ease and least suffering are those who have fully acknowledged their impermanence, and have tended to their unfinished business.

The practice is for everyone who will not live on earth forever.  It gives us a visceral understanding of the sanctity of each moment.  During the meditation, you will be gently guided into relaxation, visualization and reflection. Through examining what arises, we gain immediate access to a more peaceful state of mind.

NOTE:  Participants will need a pillow, blanket, notebook and pen. Please also bring a memento or photograph from a deceased loved one to use in our altar.

From our last death meditation event:

“It helped me clearly see the things that are truly important in life: family, friends, lasting impact and love. I urge you to attend and bring your spouse. I think it may be one of your favorite EO events ever.” - Brooks Bell
